Mathematics and Statistics Minor

Mathematics or statistics are used in every quantitative discipline. If you would like to get or expand exposure to mathematics or statistics, consider one of these minors in the fields of mathematics or statistics.

Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data requires strong theoretical backgrounds in mathematics and statistics, as well as hands-on analytical and technical skills. This minor gives students from a wide variety of majors coursework that will help them become effective data analysts.

Total hours: 22-23

Required courses:

  • MAT 250 Calculus and Analytic Geometry I
  • STA 265 Methods of Statistics and Data Science
  • STA 465 Applied Statistics I

and at least one of (the latter is highly recommended)

  • STA 135 Introduction to Probability and Statistics I
  • STA 253 Introduction to Probability and Statistics II

plus at least two courses from the list

  • MAT 308 Calculus and Analytic Geometry II
  • MAT 455 Probability in the Actuarial Sciences
  • STA 430  Explorations in Statistics
  • STA 440 Mathematical Statistics I
  • STA 441 Mathematical Statistics II
  • STA 450 Introduction to Engineering Statistics
  • STA 466 Applied Statistics II
  • STA 567 Introduction to Time Series Analysis
  • STA 568 Bayesian Methods
  • STA 569 Topics in Statistics

For students already taking MAT 250, 308, STA 440 for another program, the recommended coursework is:

  • STA 253 Introduction to Statistical Data Analysis
  • STA 265 Methods of Statistics and Data Science
  • STA 465 Applied Statistics I
  • STA 466 Applied Statistics II
  • STA 441 Mathematical Statistics II

and at least two of the following:

  • MAT 455 Probability in the Actuarial Sciences
  • STA 567 Introduction to Time Series Analysis
  • STA 568 Bayesian Methods
  • STA 569 Topics in Statistics

This general-purpose mathematics minor will expand your exposure to mathematics or statistics.

Total hours: 23

Required courses:

  • MAT 250 Calculus and Analytic Geometry I
  • MAT 308 Calculus and Analytic Geometry II
  • MAT 309 Calculus and Analytic Geometry III

and nine hours of selected mathematics or statistics courses numbered above 309 (except for MAT 330, MAT 399, and STA 554). Departmental approval required.
