Engineering - Civil and Sustainability Degree

Civil Engineering Degree

Civil and Sustainability Engineering graduates have the potential for professional engineering licensure and employment throughout the United States. A wide variety of positions are available in small and large engineering design firms; construction companies; municipalities; state and federal agencies; and the military. Careers include design, field engineering, and project management.

Civil and Sustainability Engineering serves the basic needs of society through the planning, design, and construction of buildings, roads, bridges, water and wastewater distribution and treatment systems, storm water management systems, landfills, water pollution control, and the cleanup of contaminated soils and groundwater. Resource and energy conservation, reuse and recycling of materials, and protection of public health and the environment are intrinsic to the program.

Civil and Sustainability Engineering provides students with education, knowledge, and experience in:

  • Structural analysis

  • Steel and Concrete Design

  • Water and Wastewater Treatment System Design

  • Transportation Systems Design

  • Soil and Groundwater Remediation Design

  • Storm Water Collection System Design

  • Construction Planning and Estimating

  • Construction Materials

Accreditation

Steps to obtain accreditation by EAC/ABET are underway. Accreditation is expected during August 2023 and will be retroactive to current students.

Program Educational Objectives

The Program Educational Objectives for the Civil and Sustainability Engineering program describe the characteristics of graduates in the context of their career work environments, and are consistent with ÌÇÐÄlogoÈë¿Ú State’s mission and the needs of our constituencies. We expect our graduates to attain the following Program Educational Objectives within a few years of graduation:

Within a few years of entering a professional environment, graduates of the ÌÇÐÄlogoÈë¿Ú State University Civil and Sustainability Engineering Program will meet the following objectives:

  1. Function as productive engineering professionals by developing ethical and sustainable solutions through critical thinking and effective communication.
  2. Contribute to the engineering profession and to society as members or leaders in professional, local and global societies or organizations.
  3. Continue their education through activities such as pursuit of professional licensure, attainment of professional certifications, completion of continuing education courses, and enrollment in programs of graduate study in civil and environmental engineering fields.

Student Outcomes

The Student Outcomes describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation.

Graduates of the Civil and Sustainability Engineering program at ÌÇÐÄlogoÈë¿Ú will attain:

  1.  an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying
    principles of engineering, science, and mathematics;
  2.  an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with
    consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social,
    environmental, and economic factors;
  3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences;
  4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and
    make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in
    global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts;
  5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership,
    create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet
    objectives;
  6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data,
    and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions;
  7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning
    strategies.

Career Outlook for Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects an overall increase in civil engineering employment of 19.7 percent by the year 2022. This increase is almost twice the rate of overall employment and about three times the increase in all engineering disciplines. In Kentucky, civil engineering is projected to be in the top 20 areas of employment opportunity through 2020 for those careers requiring a bachelor’s degree. Civil engineering is projected to have more employment opportunities than any other engineering discipline by 2020 based on information prepared by the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Agency.
