Request a short URL

A short URL is an easy to remember URL that you can use on print materials to direct users to a webpage with an otherwise lengthy URL path.

Short URLs are meant for non-digital media.  If a user can click a link, use descriptive link text and the full URL (email text, signatures, websites). They should not be requested simply because a shorter/cleaner URL is preferred.

All short URLs begin with the standard murraystate.edu domain name, followed by a backslash / and then either a simple keyword, phrase, or other combination of keywords. You should choose keywords that are relevant to the page or site, the content, or mean something to the user who will need to remember the short URL to type into a browser later. Do not use acronyms or abbreviations that would defeat the purpose of having a short URL.

  • Short URLs can be adjusted later to point to different pages - or pages can be updated to reflect new content. This means there is no need to create a new short URL.
  • Short URLs should NOT have any other backslashes or structure to them.
  • Short URLs will point to the homepage (index) of your site.
  • Consider using a QR Code instead of a short URL in print. QR codes can point directly to any page.
